While anyone can develop an eating disorder, research shows that more than 90 percent of those suffering from eating disorders are women between the ages of 12 and 25.  However, increasing numbers of older women and men have eating disorders and hundreds of thousands of boys are affected as well.

Eating disorders frequently co-occur with other psychiatric disorders such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders.  In addition, people with eating disorders can experience a wide range of physical health complications, including serious heart conditions and kidney failure.  Therefore, the earlier these disorders are diagnosed and treated, the better the chances are for full recovery.
