Sandiford Rehabilitation Center

Our staff of rehabilitation specialists provide inpatient physical, occupational, speech-language pathology and recreational therapy services for a 24-bed inpatient unit at Binghamton General Hospital.   The inpatient Sandiford Rehabilitation Center cares for people who have been diagnosed with, or had surgery for may types of medical conditions, including stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, major multiple trauma, amputation, neurological disorders, total joint replacements and hip fractures.  We also provide rehabilitation for those with certain types of arthritis and joint inflammation.

Our program is based on a long tradition of quality rehabilitation care that was pioneered at Binghamton General Hospital some three decades ago.  The inpatient unit opened in 1974 and remains the only acute care, inpatient rehabilitation service in the region.  The center is named in memory of George W. Sandiford, M.D., the physician who led the development of medical rehabilitation in the Southern Tier in the 1970s.

Qualifying conditions:

Federal guidelines have been established to ensure patients are getting the right care in the right environment.  These guidelines are used to determine whether patients qualify for inpatients rehabilitation following diagnosis, treatment or surgery.  You will be able to have inpatient rehabilitation if your condition meets specific criteria.  If it does not, there are many other rehabilitation options in the community that can meet your specific needs.

Hospital-based rehabilitation is designed for patients who have experienced a functional disability from a neurological, surgical or medical disease or injury.  This unit offers convenient access to a highly integrated system of inpatient rehabilitation services.  Professional healthcare staff work with patients and their families to meet functional goals and maximize independence.  During any typical stay at the Sandiford Rehabilitation Center, a patient is evaluated and treated by a team consisting of a physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine, an admissions coordinator, a rehabilitation nurse, and a variety of therapists, clinical social workers and personal care assistants to provide an individualized treatment approach.  As recovery occurs, treatment will help patients:

  • prevent avoidable medical complications
  • maximize functional abilities
  • make a smooth transition home

In general, you may qualify for inpatient rehabilitation during a hospital stay if you have a diagnosis of:

  • Neurological Condition
  • Brain Injury or Dysfunction
  • Spinal Cord Dysfunction
  • Amputation of Limb
  • Major Multiple Trauma
  • Orthopedic Condition/Fractures
  • Stroke
  • Arthritis
  • Cardiac
  • Pulmonary
  • Pain Syndromes
  • Total Joint Replacement
