Driver Rehabilitation
The skills of attention, memory, and judgment play a
significant role in driving performance and impact an individual’s ability to
drive safely in the community. An in-clinic driving evaluation is
completed by a licensed/registered occupational therapist. This assessment
will look at functional skills needed for safe driving such as:
- Visual Function
- Range of Motion
- Coordination
- Sensation
- Endurance
- Mental Flexibility
|
- Perception
- Functional Mobility (Transfers)
- Basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IDALs)
- Physical and Cognitive Abilities
- Reaction Time
- Attention to Environment
|
After a stroke, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic
surgery, trauma, or deconditioning an individual may have decreased skills to
drive safely in the community. Individuals with a current driver’s license
may contact the Medical Rehabilitation department to set up an in-clinic
evaluation. You will be asked a few intake questions before you are
scheduled for an appointment. The evaluation takes between 60 and 90
minutes. A doctor’s prescription is required prior to beginning the
evaluation. Please discuss your desires and concerns with your family
members and physician.
