U.S. News ranks UHS among nation's best hospitals
The national news magazine U.S. News & World Report has ranked UHS as one of the top hospitals in New York State.
The magazine's just-published “Best Hospitals 2012-13" ranked UHS Hospitals 34th out of 241 hospitals in the Empire State, giving the organization special recognition in gynecology and orthopedics.
"This is a major achievement for our hospitals, and speaks volumes about the commitment made by our medical staff, employees and volunteers to ensure that we continually provide top-quality care to our patients,” said Matthew J. Salanger, president and chief executive officer of UHS. “It’s further evidence that we are making healthcare better, right now, in the Southern Tier."
The magazine's ranking underscores UHS' leadership in providing quality, patient-centered care, and reflects the high marks UHS Hospitals has been receiving from patients, Mr. Salanger said.
According to the latest data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, an impressive 96 percent of UHS Hospitals patients surveyed said they probably or definitely would recommend UHS Wilson Medical Center or UHS Binghamton General Hospital to someone else needing care.
In announcing the national magazine's 2012-2013 list, Avery Comarow, U.S. News' health rankings editor, likened the results to a global positioning system, calling it a useful tool for steering patients to hospitals which have strong skills in the procedures that are most successful and which address the medical conditions that present the biggest challenges.
“All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” said Mr. Comarow. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”
This year’s “Best Hospitals” list is the 23rd annual edition and showcases more than 720 of the nation’s nearly 5,000 hospitals, focusing on 16 medical and surgical specialties.
In addition to appearing in the magazine, the list also will be featured in U.S. News' annual guidebook, "Best Hospitals 2013."
