Patients who have experienced a functional disability from a variety of neurologic, surgical or medical diseases or injuries, have convenient access to a highly integrated system of inpatient rehabilitative services.The Sandiford Rehabilitation Center at Binghamton General Hospital, offers a contemporary interdisciplinary inpatient program, utilizing a holistic care model. Medical professional staff, work with the patients and their families to meet functional goals and to maximize independence. During a typical stay at the Sandiford Rehabilitation Center, a patient is evaluated and treated by a team consisting of a physician specializing in physical rehabilitation, an Admissions Coordinator , a Rehabilitation RN, and a variety of therapists, clinical social workers and case managers to provide and individualized treatment approach. As recovery occurs, treatment will help patients:

  • maximize functional abilities
  • make a smooth transition home

 
Patients admitted to the Rehabilitation unit can be classified into these general categories:

  • Stroke
  • Neurological Condition Brain Injury or Dysfunction

  • Cardiac
  • Burns
  • Other Disabling Impairments
  • Developmental Disabilities

  • Total Joint Replacement

  • Congenital Deformities Congenital deformities
  • Major Multiple Trauma
  • Debility

The Sandiford Rehabilitation Center can provide services for school age children, (age 6 is the youngest age accepted) adolescence, adults and geriatric patients. The majority of patients are adult and geriatric age.

Length of stay at The Sandiford Rehabilitation Center is based on a patients rehabilitation diagnosis and treatment plan. An average length of stay could be five days for orthopedic patients, to two to three weeks for neurologically impaired patients, such as stroke or brain injury patients.
