Psychiatric Services

Binghamton General Hospital has developed a spacious,
modern 69-bed psychiatric
program in four separate nursing units. The psychiatric service includes a
family support program as well as consultations for the physically ill acute
care patient facing a psychiatric crisis during hospitalization.
Binghamton General Hospital's mental health services include evaluation and
treatment of child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, in both
out-patient and in-patient residential settings, including psychotherapy,
pharmacotherapy and chemical dependency treatment.
All accepted treatment modalities are available to patients, and they are
encouraged to be involved in all decisions related to their care. The program is
committed to interdisciplinary treatment, with psychiatric rehabilitation as the
underlying philosophy (see Integrated Behavioral Health). The approach is
interpersonal and psycho-educational, stressing the value of the therapeutic
community, the power of group support, and the conviction that people can be
empowered to grow and heal when provided with a positive, stimulating and
nurturing environment.
While there are no arbitrary exclusions, adolescents and individuals with
organic mental disorders are best served by other specialized programs. Trauma
survivors and those with both substance abuse problems and other psychiatric
conditions are especially successful in this challenging and supportive program.
The psychiatric program also includes a 24-hour Crisis Center. Together, these
services put Binghamton General at the forefront of short-term in-patient and
out-patient care for the mentally ill.
