Dialysis Services
Your kidneys perform vital functions in the circulatory and urinary systems,
such as filtering wastes and toxins from the blood, regulating blood pressure,
and controlling water balance and alkalinity of body fluids. When the kidneys
can no longer function properly, patients may undergo kidney dialysis. In this
process, a machine assumes the kidney’s function of filtering waste products out
of the blood. Dialysis can be performed at home or in the hospital.
United Health Services Hospitals is the leading provider of dialysis services in
the Broome County area. For nearly three decades, United Health Services has
been providing this life-saving service and now has 20 hemodialysis stations at
Binghamton General Hospital, providing roughly 18,000 treatments annually for
about 150 patients.
Patients facing end-state renal failure are increasing their life span and
quality of life through dialysis and the use of new drugs. About 20 percent of
patients receive dialysis therapy at home.
