The HOME Program provides mental health services
for elderly persons who are unable or unwilling to leave their homes for
assessment or treatment. Any Broome County resident age 60 or older can receive
the services. Consultation with a mental health professional, in-home
mental health assessment and/or short-term counseling can be provided. Referrals
to other community services
are made as needed. There is no charge for the mental
health services provided by the HOME Program.
A team composed of clinical social workers and registered
psychiatric nurses are available for home visits.
Depending on the situation, one or two professionals
will visit the home. The HOME Program has access to
geriatric psychiatrists for consultation. Some types of
problems seen by the team are: depression, isolation,
confusion, unusual behavior, anxiety and hallucinations.
To contact the HOME Program, call the Broome County
Office for the Aging at 607.778.2411, weekdays,
8:30 am - 5 pm. A trained caseworker will take your
request. Self-referrals are accepted, as well as referrals
from family caregivers, physicians or other professionals.
If mental health assistance is needed, the caseworker
will contact the HOME Program team. If appropriate,
a home visit will be scheduled, usually within a week.
Emergency or dangerous situations that need immediate
attention are not appropriate for the HOME Program.
In these cases, call CPEP at 762.2302 or the police.
The HOME Program, a multi-agency initiative, is a collaborative
effort of United Health Services Hospitals, Binghamton Psychiatric
Center, Broome County Office for the Aging, Broome County Social
Services and Broome County Mental Health. The HOME Program
is supported by the New York State Department of Mental Health
Community Reinvestment Funds.
