Message from Dr. James Della Valle, Transitional Year Program Director
Welcome to our TY Program,
Thank you for your interest in our Transitional Year Residency Program. It is my
personal goal to assist you in obtaining the best education possible during your
year at Wilson Medical Center.
Our program offers several unique advantages. Wilson is the regional referral
center for a population base of 400,000 people. This assures that you will
participate in the care of patients with both usual and unusual conditions.
First year residents have direct contact with the patients and are involved at
all levels with the decision making that is the hallmark of an excellent
clinical education. An active Hospitalist program provides the confidence that
residents will not be overwhelmed with large numbers of patients, emphasizing
the importance of education over service.
Internal Medicine is the foundation of our program with opportunities to spend
more time in this discipline if the resident chooses. The four months of
elective time permit the opportunity to explore some areas such as Surgery or
Critical/Emergency Care in greater depth. A new Academic Medicine elective
permits the resident to prepare for USMLE III while at the same providing
protected time to complete a poster for a scientific meeting or a case report
for publication.
All of our residents are now exposed to a core body of knowledge through a
computer based service which standardizes the didactic experience based on the
Core Content of Emergency Medicine. The program comes with pre and post tests
which assess information acquired.
Our weekly TY conference serves as a forum for topics and case presentations.
Residents develop these programs using the Core Competencies of the ACGME. They
are exciting and scholarly.
The Transitional Year at Wilson Medical Center is dynamic and innovative. It is
my intention that it will be recognized as the premier TY Residency in the
United States. If you are passionate about becoming the best physician that you
can be and you are dedicated to our profession, please consider applying to our
program. I look forward to meeting with you.
