Internal Medicine Special Emphasis Tracks
The Internal Medicine Residency offers a unique opportunity to tailor your
educational needs. We offer senior residents the opportunity to pursue
special emphasis tracks which enable the resident to use elective time to
receive additional training in areas of interest. All of these have a
formalized curriculum and a physician advisor. All residents are eligible
to participate in these tracks assuming they are in good academic status.
Alternative Medicine: Our curriculum is developed in collaboration
with Dr. Joseph Helms, a world renowned expert in the field of acupuncture.
The course is taught on site with Victor Elinoff, MD, the Director of the
Medical Acupuncture Program at United Health Services, and he serves with Dr.
Janice Pegels, MD. Both oversee the acupuncture clinic at the Johnson City
Family Care Center. The program offers adequate exposure to acupuncture
with the ability to become certified in acupuncture during the residency
training program.
Advisor: Victor Elinoff, MD, Janice Pegels, MD
Geriatric Medicine: Participate in one focused block rotation in your
second year and two blocks in your third year working exclusively with Geriatric
patients and physicians certified in Geriatric Medicine.
Advisor: James Crosby, MD, Shawn Berkowitz, MD
Hospitalist Medicine: For Internal Medicine residents with a significant
interest in in-patient medicine, this track allows you to focus on additional
training in hospital medicine and is ideal prep for those pursuing a career as a
hospitalist physician, with additional blocks on in-patient rotations including
Hospitalist Medicine electives as well as ICU and/or CCU.
Advisor: Roger Scott, DO
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine: As a hospital that offers dually
accredited residency programs, all of our residents have the opportunity to
learn Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy techniques. In addition to weekly
lectures and monthly grand-rounds, you will also participate in one or more of
our five weekly outpatient clinics and our in-patient referral service. In
addition, DO’s are given the opportunity to moonlight in the OMT clinics as a
supplement to their salary.
Advisor: Marita Powell, DO
Sports Medicine: Tracked residents interested in Sports Medicine will
spend one second year block rotation and two third year blocks working with
Sports Medicine physicians and fellows in and around the Binghamton area
including time in the UMA Sports Medicine Clinic and with local high schools,
Division I college (Binghamton University) and professional athletic teams.
Advisor: Christine Blonski, DO, Donald Nash, MD
Urgent Care Medicine: Residents interested in practicing urgent care
medicine will find this a very attractive track. This special emphasis
will be placed on urgent care medicine. Exposures will primarily be in the
urgent care centers in the region. Residents are expected to develop
additional expertise in urgent care medicine. Time will be spent between
training in the urgent care centers and in the Emergency Department.
Advisor: Peter Lo Faso, MD
International Medicine (Non-Track Opportunity): For residents who see
themselves practicing outside of the United States with a medically underserved
population or who simply want to broaden their horizons. |
