Family Medicine Special Emphasis Tracks
The Family Medicine Residency offers a unique opportunity to tailor your
educational needs. We offer senior residents the opportunity to pursue
special emphasis tracks which enable the resident to use elective time to
receive additional training in one or more facets of Family Medicine. All
of these have a formalized curriculum and a physician advisor. All
residents are eligible to participate in these tracks assuming they are in good
academic status. Special emphasis tracks are formally recognized by the
program and awarded a certificate upon graduation.
Alternative Medicine: Our curriculum is developed in collaboration
with Dr. Joseph Helms, a world renowned expert in the field of acupuncture. The
course is taught on site with Victor Elinoff, MD, the Director of the Medical
Acupuncture Program at United Health Services, and he serves with Dr. Janice
Pegels, MD. Both oversee the acupuncture clinic at the Johnson City Family
Care Center. The program offers adequate exposure to acupuncture with the
ability to become certified in acupuncture during the residency training
program.
Advisor: Victor Elinoff, MD, Janice Pegels, MD
Dermatology: The Dermatology area of concentration offers the residents
an expanded training in dermatology. The purpose of this track is to
expand and amplify the learning achieved during the dermatology rotation
training in the residency program. Residents in this track will receive
additional training in the area of dermatology with a concentration on more
procedural training, advanced dermatology training, such as methotrexine
prescribing, psoriasis, wound care training, additional training in the area of
acne and exposure to cosmetic dermatology and laser therapy. The residents
will work with board-certified dermatologists, as well as other physicians with
expertise in the area. Recognized special emphasis track by ACOFP.
Advisor: James Crosby, MD, Romeo Morales, MD
Geriatric Medicine: Participate in one focused block rotation in your
second year and two blocks in your third year working exclusively with Geriatric
patients and physicians certified in Geriatric Medicine. Residents in the
Geriatric track will also be given the opportunity to maintain a more
traditionally Geriatric patient population in the continuity out-patient clinic.
Advisor: James Crosby, MD, Shawn Berkowitz, MD
Hospitalist Medicine: For Family Medicine residents with a significant
interest in in-patient medicine, this track allows you to focus on additional
training on in hospital medicine and is ideal prep for those pursuing a career
as a hospitalist physician, with additional blocks on in-patient rotations
including Internal Medicine as well as ICU and/or CCU.
Advisor: Roger Scott, DO
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine: As a hospital that offers dually
accredited residency programs, all of our residents have the opportunity to
learn Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy techniques. In addition to weekly
lectures and monthly grand-rounds, you will also participate in one or more of
our five weekly outpatient clinics and our in-patient referral service.

Rural Medicine: Residents interested in practicing in a rural area will
find all the training you need at Wilson. Special emphasis will be placed
on developing the procedural skills necessary to be of greatest assistance to
medically underserved areas. Residents in the Rural Medicine track will
also be given the opportunity to spend a portion of their continuity clinic time
in rural clinics in and around the Greater Binghamton area.
Advisor: Richard Terry, DO
Sports Medicine: Tracked residents interested in Sports Medicine will
spend one second year block rotation and two third year blocks working with
Sports Medicine physicians and fellows in and around the Binghamton area
including time in the UMA Sports Medicine Clinic and with local high school,
Division I college (Binghamton University) and professional athletic teams.

medicine will find this a very attractive track. This special emphasis
will be placed on urgent care medicine. Exposures will primarily be in the
urgent care centers in the region as well as additional training in acute care
medicine at the Johnson City Family Care Center. Residents are expected to
develop additional expertise in urgent care medicine. Time will be spent
between training in the urgent care centers and in the Emergency Department.

faculty and staff support to help each resident secure an away rotation in
high-risk obstetrics.

themselves practicing outside of the United States with a medically underserved
