What is a cardiologist?
A cardiologist has special training and skill in finding, treating, and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels in adults.

All cardiologists on staff at United Health Services Hospitals are required to be board-eligible or board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.

What is a pediatric cardiologist
A pediatric cardiologist has special training and skill in finding, treating, and preventing heart and blood vessel disease in infants, children and teenagers. In some cases, the pediatric cardiologist begins diagnosis and treatment in the fetus and continues into adulthood.

What is a cardiac surgeon?
A cardiac surgeon has special training and skills to perform delicate operations on the heart, blood vessels and lungs.
All cardiac surgeons on staff are board-certified in both general surgery and thoracic surgery.

What is a vascular surgeon?
A vascular surgeon evaluates and treats patients with conditions affecting the arteries and veins throughout the body with the exclusion of the blood vessels of the heart, which are treated by cardiac surgeons. A vascular surgeon is trained to operate on arteries and veins of the chest, abdomen, neck and Extremities. Aneurysm repair, stroke prevention surgery, bypass surgery and endovascular repair of conditions of arteries and veins are included within the specialty of vascular surgery. All vascular surgeons on staff are board-certified in both general surgery and vascular surgery.


Free telephone referral service
United Health Services has a free telephone referral service for the general public with detailed information--including board certification--on participating members of the hospital's medical staff. The Physician Referral Service is part of our Nurse Direct program and provides information about specialties, office locations, hours, education and insurance participation. The service operates 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday.

You can talk directly to a registered nurse by calling Nurse Direct (607)763-5555 , 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, seven days a week. Perhaps you’d like more detailed information about a medical condition your doctor has discussed with you. Nurse Direct can help with up-to-date, reliable medical information that’s free and confidential.
