Our volunteer program gives you the chance to show you care. How? The best way possible, by helping others. People helping people is the essence of our volunteer program. It is a simple program, designed to fit your unique interests and abilities and best of all, during times most convenient for you. Our program is continually evolving, improving and enriching the lives of others because of the support of our volunteers.

 We appreciate the qualities our volunteers bring to our organization and we put them to good use. Join us today and begin to make a meaningful contribution to United Health Services’ program of complete patient care.

To assure the highest quality of patient care, as well as brighten the stay of our patients, United Health Services offers many interesting ways for you to serve:

Admission/Discharge/Escorts/Greeters:
• Escort patients to or from their rooms at admission and discharge.
• Greet and assist patients who are admitted or who are using outpatient services. Walk with patients and visitors to their destinations.

Ambulatory Care Center/Pre-Admission Testing:
Transport patients, deliver laboratory work, filing, or serve as a host or hostess.

Dietary Services:
Assist the dietary departmental staff, packaging silverware and food supplies.*

Doulas*:
Women may assist mothers during labor. (For clinical students only)

Emergency Department Assistant:
Assist patients, families and staff by providing refreshments and magazines. Support staff with various departmental needs.

Patient Service Aides:
Assist staff on various units including but not limited to: GI Lab, Dialysis, Surgical, Cardiac.

Gift Shop/Cashier:
The snack bar and gift shop at each hospital is staffed by adult and junior volunteers. These dining areas are open to visitors, patients and employees.

Patient Information Areas:
Provide directional information to patients and visitors.

Flower and Card Delivery:
Deliver flowers and cards to patients.

Mailing/Clerical Assistance:
Address and sort hospital publications for mailing, as well as other clerical tasks for various departments.

Physical Medicine: (For physical therapy students only)
Assist physical therapists working with ambulatory patients.

Surgical Hosts and Hostesses:
Serve refreshments and relay messages to patients’ relatives undergoing surgery.

You may also consider serving United Health Services and the community by joining the Binghamton General Hospital or Wilson Regional Medical Center Auxiliaries. These volunteer organizations help maintain United Health Services’ reputation for excellent, comprehensive patient care by providing funding for equipment and programs, as well as willing hands for patient services. Learn how you can become and Auxilian by calling Binghamton General Hospital or Wilson Regional Medical Center and ask for the Volunteer Office.

Junior Volunteers may join if they are between the ages of 14 – 18 and will be involved with services appropriate to their age.
