UHS Foundation Logo

The UHS Foundation raises funds for state-of-the-art equipment, patient care facilities and community outreach programs that help UHS Wilson Medical Center and UHS Binghamton General Hospital remain leading providers of medical care in the region.

Mission and Vision

The Foundation’s mission is to support innovation, service and quality at UHS by educating the community, attracting donors and managing gifts wisely. Our vision is to become the region’s health-related charitable organization of choice based on the communication of our cause, the care and service we provide to our donors, and the stewardship of the gifts entrusted to us.

Our Accomplishments

Each year, generous donors like you have helped us raise more than $1 million. But it’s not about money. It’s the impact, the good those dollars do, the difference they make in the lives of people receiving care.

During the past 10 years, this impact has been significant:

  • Relocation, expansion and construction of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UHS Wilson
  • Creation of a third cardiac catheterization lab at UHS Wilson
  • Creation of the minimally invasive surgical suite
  • Creation of the Renal Care Center at UHS Binghamton General
  • Extensive support for diagnostic breast care technology
  • Operating room equipment, high-tech radiology equipment, fetal monitoring equipment, cardiac rehabilitation equipment, laboratory equipment, defibrillators and ventilators
  • Upgrades to patient rooms
  • Support of numerous community outreach programs and staff teaching days

Why Give?

Five Compelling Reasons to Support a UHS Hospital
  • You want UHS Hospitals to always be here for you. It’s a good chance that some time in the future you or someone you love will need the sophisticated health care services UHS Hospitals provide. When that time comes, you’ll be glad you contributed today.
  • You want to give something back to the community. If you feel any of the UHS Hospital members have contributed to your health and well-being, a gift to one of the UHS Foundations is a wonderful way to say “thank you” and to help others receive high-quality health care.
  • You want your charitable dollars to stay in the region. At a time when your mailbox is flooded with donation requests, it’s comforting to know that your gift to the one of the UHS Foundations remains right here in the area of your choice, directly benefiting your family, friends and neighbors.
  • You want to boost quality of life and the local economy. The presence of good health care attracts people and desirable jobs to the community. In addition, UHS Hospitals employ more than 5,000 local residents. Your support will help keep the Southern Tier and Central New York area strong and vibrant.
  • You want to help those less fortunate than you. The member organizations and the people of UHS provide the same compassionate service to everyone who seeks our help. In fact, our hospitals are known throughout central New York for success in reaching those who might not otherwise receive the care they need.

Ways to Give

If you’d like to make a gift to UHS—by giving to the UHS Foundation, UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation or Enhance UHS Delaware Valley Hospital Fund—we welcome your support and thank you. We accept the following types of gifts, all of which are available for any facility that you wish to donate to.

Cash
Cash contributions may be made in the form of outright gifts or pledged over a period of time. Outright gifts of cash are some of the most valuable gifts we receive since they are immediately available and often unrestricted, permitting UHS to use them for our most immediate needs. Pledges allow donors to make gift payments over a specific time period.

Stocks/Securities
Outright gifts of publicly held stock, privately held stock, government and corporate bonds or mutual fund shares are deductible from federal income tax to the extent provided by law. Some outright gifts are beneficial for both the donor and UHS as they can help diversify assets and minimize capital portfolio gains.

Personal Property
Some donors choose to give personal items that have appraised values such as jewelry or art.

Real Estate
When you make an outright gift of real property held for more than a year, you obtain an income tax charitable deduction equal to the property’s full fair market value. This deduction lets you reduce the cost of making the gift and frees cash that otherwise would have been used to pay taxes. (By donating the property to UHS, you also avoid capital gains tax on the property's appreciation.) The transfer isn't subject to the gift tax, and the gift reduces your taxable estate.

Wills and Bequests
Naming the UHS Foundation, the UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Enhance UHS Delaware Valley Hospital Fund in your will is the simplest and most common type of planned gift. A gift of this kind by will or trust benefits the organization in the long term, while enabling you to retain full control of your assets during your lifetime.

Charitable Trusts and Annuities
(A charitable gift annuity lets you make a gift to UHS and receive, in turn,) guaranteed payments for life. Charitable gift annuities may be funded with cash, securities or property. Similarly, a charitable remainder trust provides you with a lifetime income and a charitable income tax deduction.

Life Insurance
You may reach a point where life insurance no longer has the financial significance for your family that it once did. In that case, please consider making a gift of the policy to the UHS Foundation, the UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Enhance UHS Delaware Valley Hospital Fund. You can assign us as sole beneficiary of an existing or specially created life insurance policy. There can be significant tax advantages to this method of giving because the full cash value of the policy may be deductible, whereas if it were cashed in, the owner could be liable for capital gains.

Retirement Plans
Careful planning can minimize the taxes due on retirement plan assets during life and at death. Retirement plan assets include those held in individual retirement accounts (IRAs) and those held in accounts under 401(k) plans, profit-sharing plans, Keogh plans and 403(b) annuity plans. Although these plans are good sources of retirement income, they may not be the best assets to pass along to family due to income and estate taxes. By naming the UHS Foundation, the UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Enhance UHS Delaware Valley Hospital Fund as beneficiary of your retirement account, the entire amount remaining in the account is available for our use with no tax consequences to your estate.

Planned Giving

Planned giving allows you to combine your desire to give to the UHS Foundation, UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation or Enhance UHS Delaware Valley Hospital Fund with your overall financial, tax and estate-planning goals. Put simply, a planned gift is a gift created during your lifetime for payment at a future date.

How You Benefit
If your long-term goals include increasing your current income, reducing your taxable income, minimizing potential estate taxes and maintaining high-quality health care locally, a planned gift to UHS may be the right choice for you.

How the Foundation Benefits
Major and planned gifts play an ever-increasing role in funding “the gap” at UHS—the difference between the cost of providing care and the reimbursement (if any) for that care. Each year, the UHS Foundation, the UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Enhance UHS Delaware Valley Hospital Fund provide critical funding to our hospitals to improve patient-care facilities, replacement capital equipment, perform renovations, establish community outreach programs and more.

Memorials and Tributes

A gift to a UHS organization can be made in memory of someone who has passed away, in honor of someone special, or to mark a special occasion or important event. Some donors make tribute gifts to recognize a doctor or to show gratitude to a nurse or caregiver. This is a wonderful way to remember or honor a friend or loved one.

Tribute gifts may be designated to a particular program or area of care or may be made to support the greatest need.

Here are some examples of tribute gifts you can make:
  • In memory or honor of someone dear
  • On a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, bar or bat mitzvah, retirement) for a friend or loved one
  • To brighten someone's day or to wish someone a speedy recovery
  • Congratulations for a graduate or for a job well done
  • With thanks to a physician, nurse or caregiver
