CyberKnife for
Prostate Cancer

One in every six men will develop this disease during his lifetime.  A diagnosis of prostate cancer can be frightening, since it may threaten a man’s life and his sexuality.  Seek medical attention promptly, because if prostate cancer is detected early - when it’s still confined to the prostate  gland - the chances for successful treatment with minimal or short-term side effects significantly increase.

We’ve got the answer: CyberKnife for Prostate Cancer

The FDA approved CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery in 2001 for the treatment of tumors anywhere in the body.  The concept of CyberKnife is to use hundreds of small radiation beams coming from different angles to deliver a high dose to the prostate where all the beams converge.  The surrounding rectum and bladder are more effectively spared from the high dose radiation because only a small fraction of the beams will pass through any point in those normal structures.

Patient Benefits

  • Convenience
  • No need for anesthesia or surgery as with prostate seed implants.
  • Urinary catheter is not required.
  • Treatment is completed in 5 days rather than 9 weeks as with conventional radiation.
  • Urinary and rectal symptoms last an average 2 weeks as opposed to several months.

Without pre-existing erectile dysfunction or incontinence, your risk for developing these conditions is very low.

Effectiveness

Other forms of radiation such as prostate seed implantation or external beam treatment (IMRT/IGRT) have been shown to be equivalent in effectiveness to surgery for favorable risk disease.  CyberKnife represent an evolution of radiation therapy rather than a revolution, and the science being this treatment is well established. In fact, the biological characteristics of prostate cancer make it uniquely suited to treatment with CyberKnife Radiosurgery.  Early results from patients with low risk prostate cancer have been excellent, with a rapid fall in the PSA, and no reported PSA failures.  Long-term results with this treatment are not yet available.
