School Based Health Centers

Chenango Memorial Hospital operates School Based Health Centers (SBHC) in the Norwich Schools, Oxford Academy and Central Schools, Unadilla Valley Central Schools, and now the Bainbridge-Guilford Central Schools.  The SBHC’s provide a variety of health services to students, including primary and preventative health care services.  Thanks to a recent federal grant, in the Norwich schools and Unidilla Valley Central Schools, dental services are now available as well.  The SBHC in collaboration with social work services also provides counseling, emotional and behavioral support services.  School nurses work closely with SBHC staff which includes a full-time, board certified pediatrician, Dr. Christina Wilson.  We coordinate care with your child’s primary care provider to improve and maintain your child’s health.  The goal of the SBHC staff is to help your child stay healthy and stay in school.

Services are provided with no out of pocket expenses, regardless of whether you have insurance or not.  We will bill your insurance or Medicaid (if applicable).  In order to do this, we need a copy of the front and back of your insurance card.  You are not responsible for a co-pay. The student’s family is responsible for the cost of services provided outside the SBHC site.  This includes x-rays or prescriptions that may be ordered.  When your insurance company is billed, they may send you an Explanation of Benefits form (EOB).  Even though this form may show an amount in the patient responsibility column, there is still no cost to the student’s family for services provided at the SBHC site.  If you have any questions about this, please call our Administrative Offices at (607) 337-4500 or (607) 337-4239.  For those who have no insurance, Chenango Health Network will be happy to assist you in getting enrolled in Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus or Medicaid. Please contact Chenango Health Network at (607) 337-4128.

The SBHC is available to all students who attend a participating school.  However, in order to have your child seen by the SBHC staff, enrollment forms giving us permission to see your child must be on file.  Enrollment forms must be updated yearly.

The SBHC is open Monday through Friday from 8am - 4pm following the student’s schedule.  This generally includes teacher conference and staff development days, when the school is open, but no students are present.  The only time the SBHC offices are closed are holidays and vacation days when the school is completely closed.  Parents may call for an appointment to have their child seen even if the student is not well enough to attend school that day.  Parents are welcome to accompany their children to the SBHC and are encouraged to communicate with the SBHC providers.

We offer yearly physicals to all students if requested.  A physical is required by the State Department of Education for children in grades K, 1, 3, 7 and 10.
