Breast imaging encompasses different imaging methods available at the UHS Breast Center such as:
- Breast ultrasound
- Breast MRI
Each imaging study provides different information that helps your physicians (and surgeons) determine whether or not your breast is healthy, needs to have a biopsy or needs to be watched closely for changes.
Since there is no one imaging method that can detect 100% of all breast cancers, imaging studies are used in conjunction with your healthcare provider’s assessment and clinical breast exam.
Screening studies vs. diagnostic studies
- A screening study is used to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease
- A diagnostic study can also be used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other sign or symptom of breast disease has been found
