Osteoporosis Rehabilitation Services

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the loss of normal bone density, mass and strength, which leads to increased porousness and vulnerability to fracture. It occurs most often in women after menopause due to hormonal changes. However, since osteoporosis can also result from a deficiency of calcium or vitamin D, men can be affected by the disease as well.
Physical therapy can help those with osteoporosis continue to live a safe and active life. Physical therapy for osteoporosis must be ordered/prescribed by your physician.
Osteoporosis Rehabilitation Treatment
The physical therapist will develop an individualized treatment program for each patient. Treatment may include:
  • Fall prevention: Fragile, brittle bones are easily broken, so fall prevention is critical. Through individual exercise programs and education, our physical therapists will educate patients on how to reduce the likelihood of falling.
  • Bone strengthening: Physical therapists will teach patients how to perform weight-bearing exercises that will help improve and maintain bone density, as well as limit bone loss.
  • Body mechanics: Good body mechanics help prevent pain and protect the spine from fractures. Our physical therapists will educate patients on how to maintain good posture and how to position and move their body when carrying or lifting items.
