Radiation Oncology

Choose UHS for sophisticated radiation therapy—or radiotherapy—a painless, noninvasive cancer treatment.

Radiation Oncology at UHS

You and your doctor may choose to incorporate radiation therapy into your cancer treatment plan. Radiotherapy uses focused, high-energy beams to kill cancer cells only in the parts of your body where cancer is present.

Radiation therapy can be used either in place of cancer surgery or afterward to prevent cancer from coming back. There are many different kinds of radiotherapies. You will work with your doctor to determine which course of treatment is right for you.

External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT)

External beam radiation therapy delivers radiation treatments from outside your body. Your doctor will choose from among several different EBRT methods.

CyberKnife® Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

This painless, nonsurgical radiation treatment uses high doses of precisely focused energy beams to destroy cancer cells while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. UHS Wilson Medical Center was the first hospital in New York state to offer this advanced treatment option.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

Image-guided radiation therapy delivers radiation directly to a tumor with remarkable precision using real-time imaging.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

IMRT uses a computer-controlled device that emits precise, high-energy radiation beams from multiple directions to destroy cancer cells. This process allows you to get higher radiation doses with minimal side effects to surrounding healthy tissue.
