Valve Clinic Opens at UHS
UHS has opened a new Valve Clinic under the direction of Alon Yarkoni, MD, FACC, a fellowship-trained interventional cardiologist. The Valve Clinic was created to evaluate and diagnose patients with valvular heart disease, using a team approach that includes cardiologists, surgeons and nurse practitioners. The highly-specialized team of medical and surgical experts will evaluate the complexities of each patient's condition and, using the latest clinical technology, work with the patient to determine the best treatment option and develop an individualized plan of care.
"We use a comprehensive, patient-focused, team approach," Dr. Yarkoni said. “Our goal is to improve the patient experience by streamlining the diagnostic process and expediting the treatment plan. All screening, evaluations and treatment recommendations are made by the team, with the patient receiving services all in one location. It gives patients access to specialized procedures not performed elsewhere in the region."
Dr. Yarkoni comes to UHS Cardiology with vast experience in structural heart procedures. Previously he served at the Heart and Vascular Institute of Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, and as associate program director of the cardiology fellowship at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a clinical instructor in the cardiology division of Columbia University in New York City. A graduate of Brandeis University, he received his medical degree at Rutgers University and completed a residency at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he was chief resident in internal medicine.
He has completed fellowships in cardiovascular disease at the University of Arizona-Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, where he was chief cardiovascular fellow; the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York; and the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Yarkoni has received many honors for his commitment to patient care, medical research and scholarship. He holds endovascular certification from the American Board of Vascular Medicine and certifications in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease and internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also certified by the Board of Nuclear Cardiology.
The Valve Clinic is the first step in the development of the UHS Structural Heart & Valve Center. Care will be provided using state-of-the-art technologies, including balloon valvuloplasty and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), as well as traditional medical management, open heart surgery, rehabilitation and home care.
Dr. Yarkoni joins the UHS team of Hisham Kashou, MD, and Afzal ur Rehman, MD, PhD, at the UHS Cardiology Vestal office, and Kenneth Wong, MD, and M. Bashar Yousuf, MD, at the UHS Cardiovascular Surgery Wilson Square office.
