New Technology Enhances UHS Breast Center Care
Fast, informed clinical decisions are essential to outstanding patient care. At UHS, new technology in the pathology laboratories is helping doctors to quickly and precisely report the prognostic markers of breast cancer, enabling them to more quickly, consistently and effectively determine treatment and prognosis for patients with breast cancer.
UHS pathologist Jagmohan Sidhu, MD, the lab’s medical director, is enthusiastic about the region’s only whole slide brightfield scanner packaged with advanced image management software. This is a leap forward in pathology technology which allows UHS doctors to make a “quick prognostic and predictive marker work-up” of biopsied tissue samples and determine the right course of treatment and prognosis for breast cancer patients.
Dr. Sidhu explained that “prognostication” is the identification of factors that affect survival in a patient with cancer. Identification of prognostic factors in breast cancer patients helps the oncologists also to decide whether some of the medications should be used or shouldn’t be used to treat the cancer. “The beauty of this system is that our pathologists here at UHS are now able to do this in a matter of one or two days instead of the previous turnaround time of up to 10 days when we had to send these biopsies for prognostic/predictive marker analysis to an outside lab. And we know that improved turnaround time in prognostication helps relieve anxiety for our patients and enables our providers to plan the treatment more quickly for better outcomes.”
