UHS Wilson Medical Center has been working with the Village of Johnson City, the Johnson City police and fire departments, Broome County Emergency Services and other state and local agencies to respond to the Picciano North parking deck collapse on UHS Wilson Medical Center campus.

"The support and assistance we have received has been outstanding," said Matthew Salanger, President and CEO of UHS. "Within moments of the incident, support teams began their work. When an incident like this occurs, it reminds all of us of the support and collaboration we have in this community. Fortunately -- and miraculously -- there were no casualties or injuries. At the same time, no one is more interested in obtaining detailed answers about the cause than we are. A comprehensive site inspection and engineering review are underway," said Salanger.

The UHS priority now is to ensure the continued safety of all involved in the ongoing effort to clear the site. A structural engineer from Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt has been on site since Thursday and continues to work with the UHS team and LeChase construction. Normal hospital operations have been resumed in the food service area. On Monday, patient care services that were relocated on Friday will return to their Picciano locations.
Christina Boyd, a spokesperson for UHS, has confirmed that a full assessment of the collapsed Picciano North parking deck on the UHS Wilson campus was completed in June, 2013. That assessment noted specific recommendations related to safety concerns, structural integrity or prevention of deterioration. All of these priority recommendations were completed in 2014. It is expected that the investigation into the collapse will take weeks, if not months. It is a comprehensive review, including possible flaws dating all the way back to the original design and construction.
