Shattered Dreams Program Comes to Walton

Shattered Dreams WaltonMembers of the UHS Delaware Valley Hospital staff were proud and privileged to be able to assist Walton Central School’s Student Council students in producing its Shattered Dreams program. The nationally known program is used to shed light on the consequences of drunk and/or distracted driving. Students Hunter McCall and Eric Webler had seen the program at a leadership conference and wanted to bring it to Walton, so they secured the support of Student Council advisor, Simone Tucker and involved others in the community including the Walton Police Dept, the Walton Fire Department and Emergency Squad, Courtney Funeral Home and the LifeNet medical Helicopter.

The students produced 5 videos: the Party, the Accident, the Hospital, the Police Station and the Funeral, and staged a “live” accident scene during a several hour long assembly held for students in grades 9-12. The event, which was strategically held just prior to the school’s prom night, was attended by Mary Doig, RN, Director of Emergency and Ambulatory Services at Delaware Valley, who said that the impact from the program was palpable. “There were hundreds of kids watching, but you could have heard a pin drop.”

UHS Delaware Valley nurses, Lew Jones and Scott Ingliss; Luis Rodriguez-Betancourt, MD and Michael Free, RPA-C all took part in the 28 minute Hospital video. Accident victims and their family members came to the hospital and were all treated as they would be in a real situation. The patients’ injuries and behaviors were very realistic and viewers watching the entire set of videos will undoubtedly get caught up in the drama and tragedy of the situation.

According to Doig, Walton’s Shattered Dreams program is extremely impactful, realistic and thought-provoking. To see the videos, photos of the “live” scene and read more about the work that went into creating the project go to Walton Central School District website www.waltoncsd.org
