More than 475 people from around the Southern Tier enjoyed beautiful weather and an informative golf presentation by the legendary Nancy Lopez Aug. 26 at the En-Joie Golf Course.

The crowd set a new record for the "UHS Golf Expo with Nancy Lopez," which has been held for three years as a kickoff to the annual Dick's Sporting Goods Open Golf Tournament.

This year the UHS event included a news conference featuring UHS Orthopedics and Sports Medicine providers, plus a host of health exhibits of special interest to women and a drawing for theme baskets.

"Our aim is to make this gathering as valuable as possible, first by hosting Nancy's visit, and second by providing the latest in information about sports medicine, total joint replacement and general orthopedic health," Christina Boyd, vice president for Community Relations at UHS, told attendees.

Continuing, Christina said, "In doing so, we can always turn to a top expert and our guest of honor, a woman who has combined a remarkable career on the Tour with a devotion to the cause of fitness, well-being and lifelong health."

With 48 LPGA Tour victories and three major championships to her credit, Ms. Lopez is a World Golf Hall of Fame member and one of the most celebrated women in the sport of professional golf today.

In 1978 she became the only LPGA Tour member to win Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and the Vare Trophy in the same season. In the decade following her Rookie of the Year designation, she amassed the 48 wins and their championships, and was named Player of the Year four times.

Today Ms. Lopez actively works to promote public awareness of many medical issues, such as arthritis and cardiovascular disease, which run in her family, and is a generous supporter of cancer and heart disease research.

The Dick’s Sporting Goods Open of the Champions Tour was held Aug. 28 through 30.
