mary doig sally dean award

Paul Summers, CEO and Mary Doig, RN

The Sally Dean award is UHS Delaware Valley Hospital’s highest honor. It was created in memory of registered nurse, Sally Dean, who during her tenure at Delaware Valley, treated her patients, their visitors and her co-workers with true dedication, commitment and compassion.

Hospital employees are encouraged to nominate someone for the award and this year’s winner, Mary Doig, RN was overwhelmingly nominated by members of the DVH staff. Mary is the Director of Emergency and Ambulatory Services at the hospital.

In their nominations staff spoke of her many qualities as a leader and caregiver: “a great role model,” “even on vacation she is available to us,” “ a reminder of why I became a nurse,” “exemplary leadership,” “ a credit to her profession and our facility,” “at the fair booth, she listened
intently and made each person feel better with her empathy and encouragement,” “an advocate for the patient,” and finally, “she has left a professional imprint on both me and her staff.”

Many area residents will know Mary, as she has cared for them during her tenure at DVH. But many may not know about her contributions and her tireless work to ensure UHS Delaware Valley Hospital staff is ready should any disaster occur. She serves on the county committee also. Her
leadership in the emergency department ensures that patients receive high quality care, in a caring manner. Letters from patients and even from the sheriff’s department, acknowledging her clinical ability and caring nature, made Mary a perfect person to be recognized as this year’s Sally
Dean award recipient.

In accepting the award from Paul Summers, CEO, Mary stated she had worked with Sally Dean and knew first hand of her care and support for the patients and staff, which made this honor even more special and meaningful for her.
