Dr. Rehman named VP for Cardiovascular Services

Afzal ur Rehman, MD, PhD, has been named vice president for Cardiovascular Services at UHS.

He also will continue in his current role as vice president for Informatics.

Dr. Rehman's appointment was announced by Matthew J. Salanger, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of UHS.

"Dr. Rehman has shown exceptional leadership in enabling us to establish a state-of-the-art Heart & Vascular Institute, as well as in advancing medical information technology across the UHS system," Mr. Salanger said. "His knowledge, skill and dedication are integral to our ability to expand many of our key services and enhance the total patient experience."

Dr. Rehman said: "I am very pleased to accept this new position, and look forward to working with our cardiovascular team in furthering the mission of the institute. Bringing together all related cardiac activities within a common format is allowing us to grow and strengthen our services across the continuum of care."

Dr. Rehman received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Punjab in Pakistan, an MB, BS from King Edward Medical College in Pakistan (plus an honorary medical degree from the State University of New York), a master's in healthcare management from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from the University of London.

He completed internal medicine residency training at UHS Wilson and fellowships in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at the Medical College of Georgia and the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Rehman is board-certified in cardiology, interventional cardiology and clinical cardiac electrophysiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Based at UHS Wilson Medical Center, the UHS Heart & Vascular Institute combines the skills of more than 30 providers offering care in 14 specialties.

These services include cardiology and interventional cardiology, sports medicine cardiology, pediatric cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery, and cardiac electrophysiology, as well as a structural heart program.
