UHS Senior Living at Ideal to celebrate 25th anniversary

UHS Senior Living at Ideal will turn 25 on Aug. 2, marking a quarter-century of providing quality long-term care at its campus on High Avenue in Endicott.

The senior complex will host "25 Years of Ideal Living," an anniversary celebration, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 2, at 600 High Avenue.

Light refreshments will be served at 11 a.m., followed by the program at 11:30, a luncheon at noon and musical entertainment from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

"A quarter-century ago, the former Ideal Hospital was transformed into a significant new health resource for our community," said Michele Gordon, RN, administrator of Ideal. "An institution that had honorably served its community for many decades was given new life. That life continues today, and continues to transform."

In 1990, the $14.5 million senior living campus was completed a month ahead of schedule and slightly under budget. The project included construction of new facilities and renovation of the old hospital and administration buildings to accommodate new uses.

Immediately the center added 50 skilled nursing beds to the community and created a positive economic impact with 170 new jobs in Endicott.

The creation of the new Ideal was the culmination of five years of planning and 18 months of development, and was followed by the move of both residents and staff from the Extended Care Facility at UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City to the High Avenue campus in Endicott.

"The opening of Ideal 25 years ago represented many firsts in our community," said Sharon Yaple, chairperson of the Board of Directors of Ideal. "Notably, it was the first and most comprehensive center of its kind in Endicott and the first to use a former hospital property to provide innovative long-term care."

Today UHS Senior Living at Ideal is a continuing care retirement community of more than 250 residents.

The campus features several levels of care, including 33 independent living apartments in the Residence Center, a 47-bed adult care facility, a 23-bed assisted living program and a 150-bed skilled nursing facility.

Ideal also is an important provider of short-term rehabilitation and specialized home care, respite care and dementia care.
