Fit Friday Tip -It’s time to disconnect to reconnect!

Start Planning for Screen Free Week May 4-10, 2015! Think of activities you and you family can do instead of watching TV! There are many things you can do so Get creative. Stay tuned for upcoming related information on how to get you and your family started!

What is Screen Free Week?
It’s a national celebration where children, families, schools and communities spend seven days reducing screen-based entertainment media and turning on life. It’s a time to turn off the screen and play, create, explore and spend time with family and friends.

How can we participate?

  • Play your favorite board game
  • Cook dinner together as a family
  • Take a walk after dinner
  • Read a book together
  • Do arts and crafts
  • Have a picnic
  • Visit local parks, hiking trails, or sports rinks

Why should I participate?

  • For each hour of television viewing per day, children
    consume an additional 167 calories.
  • Adolescents with a television in their bedroom spend
    more time watching TV and report less physical activity,
    less healthy dietary habits, worse school performance,
    and fewer family meals.
  • Screen time can be habit-forming: the more time children
    engage with screens, the harder time they have turning
    them off as they become older children.
  • The average child watches 20,000 30-second commercials
    in one year.
  • Limiting exposure to television during the first 4 years
    of life may decrease children’s interest in it in later years.
