UHS Vestal to host stiletto race for a cause

UHS Vestal will play host to a fun event this month calling attention to the value of regular breast screenings and mammograms.

“Bras for a Cause” seeks to raise community awareness about breast cancer and the importance of breast self-examination, screening and mammography for the early detection of the disease.

Funds raised will benefit the work of the YWCA's ENCOREplus program, which is designed to help women get the screenings they need.

This enjoyable, family-friendly event will be held from noon to 4 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 11, at UHS Vestal, 4417 Vestal Parkway East, and will feature music, face-painting, food and craft vendors, breast cancer awareness information and a stiletto race.

On-site parking will be available.

The stiletto race, featuring runners in their most fabulous high-heeled shoes, will take place on a 25-foot course in the parking lot of UHS Vestal.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.

Sign-in for those wishing to participate in the race will begin at 3 p.m. in the parking lot.

ENCOREplus is a YWCA breast and cervical health outreach, education and advocacy program.

It offers educational workshops and assists uninsured women in the Southern Tier with access to free breast and cervical cancer screenings.

The program also provides free transportation to and from screening appointments, and offers child care to mothers during their screenings.

ENCOREplus overcomes barriers that prevent women from obtaining quality screenings and diagnostic follow-up services.

The staff of ENCOREplus is dedicated to serving the women of our community.
