MASH Camps Coming Soon to 3 Hospitals

School students from around Greater Binghamton will soon be converging on UHS for a hands-on learning experience that will introduce them to the real world of healthcare careers.

Fifty students who will enter eighth and ninth grades this fall will participate in MASH Camps at UHS Wilson and UHS Chenango Memorial.  With the coming of autumn, kids in grades 10, 11 and 12 will have the same kind of experience at a MASH Camp at UHS Delaware Valley.

One of the highlights of the camp experience is the involved and stimulating guidance the youngsters receive from UHS employees.  Staff members take time to explain their duties to the students, then let them do some hands-on work with mannequins and real medical equipment.

“We have over 100 UHS employees who assist in the camp," said Candis Contento, BS, RN, nurse educator, UHS Hospitals.  "All departments create ‘hands-on’ activities to engage and excite the students about an amazing career in healthcare.”

This will be UHS Wilson’s 13th year hosting the camp, and 30 campers, the full capacity, are registered.  The camp will be held on July 15 and 16 at UHS Wilson, Candi said.

In addition, 20 campers (full capacity) are registered at UHS Chenango Memorial for a two-day camp set for Aug. 5 and 6, Becky Yacano, manager of Respiratory Therapy, UHS Chenango Memorial, said.  This is UHS Chenango Memorial's 11th year as a MASH site.  "The camp is very popular," Becky said.

Students attending are those who have expressed an interest in exploring healthcare careers, and UHS Wilson, UHS Chenango Memorial and UHS Delaware Valley, in conjunction with their respective Area Health Education Centers, each provide a two-day MASH Camp just for that purpose.

The days are chock-full of interactivity, featuring most departments of each hospital, and many staff members eagerly anticipate the annual opportunity to showcase the many rewards of their medical careers.

Depending on the camp location, departments visited can include:  medical rehab, respiratory therapy, women's health and maternity, medical helicopter, behavioral health, morgue, emergency department, ambulatory surgery, pharmacy, radiation oncology, food and nutrition, radiology/diagnostic imaging, infection control, pathology, volunteer services, maintenance, cardiology, nursing home, med/surg and dental services.

There is also an interactive session on why impaired driving is so dangerous.

UHS Wilson and UHS Chenango Memorial already have all of their campers registered.  In the fall, UHS Delaware Valley will invite nine area schools to enroll students for the MASH Camp in Walton.

MASH stands for Medical Academy of Science and Health.  The New York State AHEC System is a workforce development initiative.  It focuses on increasing diversity by recruiting and training people of all races and ethnicities for careers in healthcare and works to ensure that there will be enough qualified, dedicated practitioners to serve New Yorkers in the future.

UHS is a locally owned, not-for-profit, 916-bed hospital and healthcare system serving Greater Binghamton and surrounding counties. Founded in 1981, UHS provides a full range of medical, surgical, rehabilitative and long-term care services from more than 60 locations around New York’s Southern Tier.
