More than 400 women from around the Southern Tier turned out at The Links at Hiawatha Landing Aug. 12 to meet LPGA legend Nancy Lopez.

“Pearls of Wisdom with Nancy Lopez” was co-sponsored at The Links by UHS and Dick’s Sporting Goods as an exciting kickoff to the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open of the PGA Champions’ Tour Aug. 16 to 18 at the En-Joie Golf Course.

Attendees at the Pearls outing learned about good health from a number of UHS healthcare professionals staffing display tables under the big tent at The Links, then got some valuable tips on improving their golf games at a free clinic conducted by Ms. Lopez.

The celebrated golfer was introduced to the news media at 3 p.m. by UHS breast surgical oncologist Camelia Lawrence, MD, and to the crowd at 6 p.m. by UHS gynecologist Nancy Shumeyko, MD.

“We can always count on UHS and the many participating departments and providers to offer the latest in resources, including expert information on diet, exercise, physical therapy and preventive medicine for every stage of life,” Dr. Shumeyko said.  “And when it comes to improving our golf swings, we can count on this evening’s guest of honor, who has combined a remarkable career on the Tour with a devotion to the cause of fitness, well-being and lifelong health.”

With 48 LPGA Tour victories and three Major Championships, Ms. Lopez is a World Golf Hall of Fame member and one of the most celebrated women in the sport today.

In 1978 she became the only LPGA Tour member to win Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and the Vare Trophy in the same season.

In the decade following her Rookie of the Year season, she amassed 48 tour victories, three major championships and the Player of the Year designation four times.

No stranger to upstate New York, she has often played in events in the Rochester area and in the LPGA’s Corning Classic.

Today she is on the Legends’ Tour, and also works to promote public awareness of a number of health issues, including arthritis and cardiovascular disease.  She is an active contributor in the areas of heart and cancer research.

Not only that, she is always willing to offer a few pearls of golf advice to amateurs who want to improve their games.

At the news conference, Dr. Lawrence said: “I can think of no more fitting way to kick off the Dick's Sporting Goods Open week in Greater Binghamton than with an appearance by the legendary Ms. Lopez, and I hope you all will join with me in greeting her warmly as she visits The Links and in extending to her the signature hospitality of our community.”
