The UHS Foundation's Women Fore Women Golf Classic has raised more than $725,000 over the past 17 years, an extraordinary achievement for a local charity golf tournament.
"These dollars are being used exclusively for diagnostic equipment to address women's health issues and improve the lives of women in our community," said Betsy Pietriyk, executive director of the Foundation.
A total of 108 women have signed up to play in the 17th annual tournament on Friday, Sept. 6, to be held at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin.
Players will begin teeing off at 1 p.m.
Following the golf outing, the Foundation will host an evening banquet at the Links that will feature the presentation of the Women Fore Women Health Leadership Award.
This year's winner is UHS Hospitals gynecologist Nancy Shumeyko, MD, who is described as a "promoter of good health" among women and an "advocate for every single one of her patients."
Said one of her nominators: "When you see Dr. Shumeyko for care, you get the feeling that you are her only patient."
The Foundation has presented the award to a deserving community member every year since 2004.
The purpose of the tourney is twofold: to raise community awareness about health concerns unique to women, and to raise money for equipment to fight breast cancer and other diseases.
