New nutrition service offered at UHS Delaware Valley Hospital
Cathy
McLachlan, RD, certified dietitian/nutritionist at UHS Delaware Valley Hospital,
offers a large array of nutrition services to both inpatients and outpatients at
the local hospital. She notes that recently many insurance companies have
recognized the essential role nutrition plays in overall health and disease
prevention. Because of that, many are paying for nutrition services, encouraging
their plan participants to seek nutrition education and help so they can improve
their current health. “In addition, insurers understand that nutrition
counseling can also help their plan participants avoid conditions associated
with less healthy eating habits, so I am seeing patients who are looking to
adopt healthy eating habits for prevention as well.”
BMI, or body mass
index, is a calculated estimate of an individual’s body fat based on weight and
height. One new program Mrs. McLachlan is offering is available to Medicare
patients whose BMI is above a certain number. She stated, “This is a needed
service that we are happy to provide. It can be very helpful to folks who need a
bit of information, direction and some periodic contact to help them stay on
track.” She said she implemented this program, intensive behavior therapy, with
some clients beginning in November, and has seen some progress already.
The new intensive behavior therapy program is just one of the services
Mrs. McLachlan offers at UHS Delaware Valley Hospital. Other nutrition services
include diabetes education for people of all ages; counseling for gestational
diabetes; consults for special needs including lactose intolerance, celiac and
pediatric nutrition issues; and the Lifesteps® program.
